Block_head

Acrylic and ink on pine.

This painting is an experimental test piece. Working directly on pine board, a section was cut so as the painting sits above a slice of the exposed plank.

The composition of a broken line continues with my interest in rotational symmetry, but here the single beam has been split into six sections. I will continue with these experiments and can already see further variations emerging.

Paths III: Betelgeuse

Vector illustration with digital collage.

In the composition of this image a game was used. The game has rules that define certain limitations.

The rationality of the predefined field of play is balanced by allowing decisions to be made intuitively. In this way the image is created in the intersection of the logical and the unknown.

Space Cabinet

A small maquette made from cardboard, paper and gum.

The scale model is a study in three dimensions, like a drawing extruded. A possible variant of a planned sculptural construction.

Kosmein Shirt

Acrylic and ink on canvas.

Talismans are objects imbued with a metaphysical power intended to provide good luck or protection to the wearer. These magical properties were embedded into the item through the labor of copying sacred texts, and the careful design of ordered symbols inscribed upon its surface.

Talismanic shirts were worn by warriors underneath their armor, with their divine power protecting them in battle. Versions of talismanic shirts from Iran, Turkey, and India are held in museum collections around the world, and date back to 15th century.

Based on the pattern of talismanic shirts, this painting is a symbol of order and protection. Kosmein "to arrange, adorn," is related to the Greek word kosmos, it was used to describe both the arrangement of garments on the body, and of the stars and planets in the universe.

It will be shown as part of the group show Adornism at the Ballery Berlin, with an opening night on the 7th of August from 6pm.

The stars are just other bodies, like the sun.

Situs Inversus

Acrylic and ink on board.

Continuing with experimentation in the studio, these compositions follow from the work shown in the previous post. Similar to the composition Blanc Forms these two paintings are devised within a square format, again with a single line that bends and folds over itself as it rebounds across the picture plane.

These mirrored compositions create a diptych with rotational symmetry. Two paintings that look at each other, where each painting is both left and right, and the total composition shifts depending on their chosen position.

Blanc Forms

Acrylic and ink on board.

Continuing from drawings made recently, I have been experimenting in the studio on a new series of paintings. The compositions are devised within square formats, a single line that bends and folds over itself as it rebound around the picture plane.

My choices are informed by the approach of my digital drawings. The coloured line moves over a patterned background, that mimics natural forms like stone surfaces or wood grain.

These paintings are still experimental and I am intuitively following the decisions of paint and colour. I direct it, as it directs me.

Mind Blank II

Ballpoint pen, pencil, and highlighter on copy paper.

Drawing at my day job, I utilize the limited materials of office stationery to exercise operations within rule sets, and develop compositions for my ongoing studio practice.

Lock Screen

Composition for iPhone IV, vector illustration with digital collage.

This composition follows from the work Paths I + II. The format of this image was made to the specifications of an iPhone 4 screen (640×960 326 ppi) and fits perfectly for either the lock screen or home screen backgrounds. By altering the hue and applying a soft focus filter, a ghostly transition can be made between the two images, like going through a warp pipe to an underground level in a Mario Bros. game.

Paths

Digital collage, vector-based illustration.

This digital work is based on hand drawn sketches made in preparation for new paintings.

Starting with the restriction of a regular format (rectangle), the line moves within, rebounding from edge to edge. Rotational symmetry is maintained through the mirrored movements of two lines with opposite staring points, that meet, and unite in the middle.

The patterned surface of the ground, follows from my work with timber, but here considers other coloured possibilities.

FORM AND FOLD

FORM AND FOLD is the second exhibition of collaborative work between Ciaran Begley, Consuelo Cavaniglia, and myself.

Continuing from our previous exhibition TURN / FOLD / FLIP of abstract structures and drawings that centred on the idea of the book, we have expanded the unfolding page to the scale of standard hardware plywood boards. These large scale elements have been directly painted onto with sprayed gradients and geometric line work. These boards are then cut and folded with hinges to become free standing, self-supported sculptural elements that interact with colour gradients sprayed directly onto the wall, and the architectural space itself.

FORM AND FOLD will be on show at Verge Gallery, until February 21.
